Government announces £100m funding for hospices – our response

19 Dec 2024

Today (Thursday 19 December 2024) the Government has announced £100 million of funding for adult and children's hospices and an additional £26 million revenue funding to support children and young people's hospices.

James Sanderson, Chief Executive at Sue Ryder said:

“This is a very welcome announcement from the Government. It is encouraging to see their commitment and the value they have for the hospice sector. We’re glad they have responded to the insight from Sue Ryder and others about the challenges facing end-of-life care and people with terminal illness. End-of-life care is an essential part of the healthcare system and we look forward to working with the Government to build a new model for it within its 10-Year Plan for the NHS.

“Our five recommendations for a new ecosystem for palliative and end-of-life care have already been sent to Government. This includes a focus on expanding community care and embedding new, innovative Sue Ryder ‘Alongside’ wards within hospitals.

"These further steps will support the NHS to meet its wider ambitions and are critical to ensure people at end-of-life get the care they deserve.”

"We are in ongoing conversations with the Government about the challenges facing palliative and end-of-life care. We will continue to work with them to understand the detail of this announcement and the funding arrangements when they are shared in the new year."
