When a person is diagnosed as palliative in Bedfordshire, they will be able to contact our 24/7 advice and support line via 01767 641349. This is a nurse-led service that supports people through their journey and connects them to relevant services and care.
Our hospice has a 15-bed inpatient unit, people can come to us when they need symptom control. Both community and inpatient unit services support patients during the end stage of life (usually the last two weeks of life). People can make a choice of where they wish to die, and we will support people to have a comfortable and peaceful death in either the home or hospice. The inpatient unit has 24/7 assessment in a comfortable and warm environment.
At St John’s Hospice, our expert team consists of a Consultant led inpatient unit, Doctors, Sue Ryder Nurses, physiotherapists, complementary therapists, occupational therapy and healthcare assistants who all work seamlessly together. We are experts in supporting people through the most difficult times of their lives.
Watch: What’s it like inside a Sue Ryder hospice?
They just have time there. Even when they are busy, they don’t seem it and they don’t make you think this is just another job. Christine was actually at St John’s for seven weeks in the end and I think that is down to the care they gave her. It was just the little touches.
Making a referral
We treat adults aged 18 and over, living in north and mid Bedfordshire, or the Huntingdon and St Neots area of Cambridgeshire.
Referrals for both inpatient care and community services are usually made by health care professionals involved in your care. This type of referral gives us a comprehensive picture of the medical background of each patient, and what treatments have been tried prior to admission.
To refer to our inpatient unit, please download the referral form below and email us at stjohns.ipu@nhs.net
To refer to our Palliative Care Hub (community services), please call us on 01767 641349 or ask your health care professional to refer to us by emailing sueryder.pch@nhs.net or via a continuing healthcare fast track referral via CHC.
We need to raise 70% of of the amount it takes to run all of Sue Ryder’s palliative care services and we can’t do that without the amazing and continued generosity of our supporters.
