Frequently asked questions about working in neurological care

We provide specialist programmes of intensive therapy for people with acquired brain injuries (from, for example, a stroke or road traffic accident), which last approximately 12 weeks.

Our interdisciplinary teams of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, neuro-psychologists, consultants, nurses and rehabilitation assistants are a vital part of the personalised care that we provide.

They support people to build strength, relearn skills or find new ways of doing things, depending on their own goals and ambitions.

Our expert teams provide medium and long-term specialist nursing care for people with complex neurological conditions in addition to supporting people in end-of-life care.

We work with each individual to ensure that care is tailored to their specific needs. Activities are specifically designed to reflect and encourage people’s interests and skills. We will do whatever we can to enable people to live a full and satisfying life. Whether it’s an outing to the shops or having someone to read to them, we do all we can to make it happen.

In neurological care you look after people with a range of complex conditions, some of which are degenerative.

If you’re coming into neurological care for the first time, we are aware that some of the conditions our patients have will be unfamiliar and it may feel daunting. Some of these conditions are degenerative, meaning that our staff will be there at the end of someone's life. If you have previously worked in a similar setting and discussing the emotional impact of caring for someone who was dying was not encouraged, please be assured that the emotional support of our staff is a top priority.  

As a new staff member, you will have a robust induction period, with regular meetings and supervision. You will be given an individual training plan and support from the training team within the centre, in addition to a portfolio of training resources online. There is a dedicated wellbeing resource page available for all Sue Ryder staff to access at any time.

You'll be part of a team who are there for our patients and our families, but you’ll also be part of a supportive team that is there for each other too.

Neurological care can also be a hard area to work in, which is why we are committed to having comprehensive support systems in place to make sure our teams receive the support they need to keep caring.

As well as providing expert care, we also help people to maximise their independence and support their emotional and social needs. At Dee View Court, no two days are the same. You could be helping someone re-learn how to cook for themselves in a rehabilitation kitchen, planning a birthday party or arranging an excursion to a local cafe.
